Fire on Mount Athos Brought under Control as a Result of Collective Efforts

A fire that had been burning on Mount Athos for five days was brought under control on Sunday

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras had previously declared a state of emergency at Mt. Athos.

On Thursday, August 9, the Serbian government responded to Greece's call for help by sending fire fighting personnel, vehicles and helicopters to assist their Greek colleagues in extinguishing the fire.

The blaze broke out early Wednesday afternoon in the Monoxelitis area near the Serbian Monastery of Hilandari.

Besides that, Bulgarian fire fighters were sent to Greece on Saturday to help tackle the wildfire that had erupted on Wednesday near the Bulgarian St. Georgi Zograf Monastery.

As a result of collective efforts the fire was brought under control on Sunday, August 12.
