In Memory of Hans-Dietrich Genscher

The World Public Forum “Dialogue of Civilizations”' Presidency pays tribute to one of Germany’s most respected elder statesmen, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, who passed away in the age of 89. He served as Germany’s Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister for 18 years. He became the architect of an active German foreign policy.

As a living political legend he earned praise for his diplomatic vision, his efforts for reconciliation of East and West already during the time of the Cold War and afterwards, and his tireless efforts to solve conflicts peacefully. A famous quote of Mr. Genscher is: “It is not the law of the strong, but the strengthening of the law that best protects all states.” Germany certainly has lost one of its great statesmen and the World Public Forum “Dialogue of Civilizations” conveys its sympathy to the German people and in particular to the family and friends of Hans-Dietrich Genscher.
