Walter Schwimmer on Paris Newspaper Attack

Walter Schwimmer, Co-Chairman of  the World Public Forum "Dialogue of Civilizations" and former Secretary General of the Council of Europe condemned firmly the brutal terror attack in Paris on January 7.

There is no justification at all for terrorism, in particular no religious justification. Terror and murder are an assault on religion. Any attempt to justify terror with religious objectives is an abuse of religion. Therefore all people of good will and believers of all religions should not only be shocked and outraged but united in the response to the brutal terrorism.

The answer must be more dialogue among civilizations and religions and a clear denouncement of extremism, radicalism and terrorism. More than ever the media should foster mutual understanding among people of different ethnic and religious background and refrain in such a sad moment from hasty accusations and judgments.  With full recognition of the freedom of press the media need to respect the feelings of the believers of all religions.
