In 1980-88 Alexander Rahr studied history of Eastern Europe, modern history and political science at the University of Munich. From 1977 to 1985 he was visiting research fellow in the soviet leaders research project at the Federal Institute of Eastern Europe and International Research, Cologne.
In 1994-95 he served as research fellow at the Research Institute of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and Director for Russia and CIS Programmes at the German Council on Foreign Relations. In 2003 he received German highest award (Bundesverdienstkreuz) for the promotion of relations between Germany and Russia.
He became emeritus professor of the Moscow State University of Foreign Affairs in 2004. In the same year his position was YES (Yalta European Strategy) board member, member of the Valdai Discussion Club.
