Former director and professor of Centre for West Asia Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia Universitty, New Delhi.
He graduated from St. Stephens College, University of Delhi in 1964.
He is former Diplomat-in-Residence, Centre for American and Global Security, Indiana University, Bloomington, US.
Ambassador Rajendra Abhyankar retired from the Indian Diplomatic Service in August 2005 as India’s Ambassador to the EU, Belgium and Luxembourg after more than 36 years of multi-faceted diplomatic experience of people, places and issues.
He served as a Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India from 2001 to 2004. He has also served as India’s High Commissioner to Cyprus (1987-90) and Ambassador to Syria (1992-96), Turkey and Azerbaijan (1996-98). He was India’s Deputy High Commissioner in Sri Lanka (1982-84) and Consul General of India, San Francisco from 1998 to 2001.
Since retirement from the diplomatic service Ambassador Abhyankar advises the UNDP, companies in the corporate sector and philanthropic institutions on CSR and external relations.
He is chairman of Kunzru Centre for Defense Studies and Research, Pune (1972) - a private think-tank on defense and security issues.
He is also a member, Executive Board and Regulating Council of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Pune (Govt of Maharashtra nominee) India’s premier institution on Indology, oriental studies and Sanskrit.
Ambassador Abhyankar has been a frequent speaker and contributor on India, Middle-East and other international issues at universities, think-tanks and public affairs forums and media in India and abroad
