Biography:

Jan Balstad is a Norwegian labour leader for the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions and a politician for the Labour Party. He was minister of trade and shipping affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 1988–1989.

In 1968 he became secretary of Norwegian Iron and Metalworkers Union, a job he held until 1976, when he became deputy chairman of the association. He served as chairman from 1979 to 1981.
Then he was elected secretary of the Federation. In 1989 he was elected first secretary LO. This commission had until 1997, when he was elected vice chairman of the LO, a post he held until 2002.
Balstad is former chairman of A-press and Land Bank.

He has held numerous public offices, in addition, he was deputy Oslo city council during the period from 1963 to 1967.
