Biography:

Franz Magnis-Suseno is a Professor of philosophy in Jakarta.
Franz Magnis-Suseno studied at the Catholic boarding school in St. Blaise. Then he entered the Jesuit order. After that he studied philosophy and went with the approval of Major Superiors of his own volition as a missionary to Indonesia. In 1973 he received his doctorate from the University of Munich with the normative issue preconditions in thinking of the young Marx. Because he felt obliged to continue working in Indonesia, he learned the local language and in 1977 took on the Indonesian citizenship and the surname Suseno. In Indonesia, he lectured at the Philosophical School in Jakarta and also was the Rector of the University of Indonesia.

His Christian social concerns include social justice, solidarity with the poor and the religious tolerance. He gained great acclaim around the Christian-Muslim dialogue.

In 2001 he received the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Later, in 2002 the Theological Faculty of the University of Lucerne awarded him an honorary doctorate.

He is the author of a large number of publications, above all in Indonesian, in particular in the field of ethics, political philosophy, and the culture of Java.
